Samuel L. Jackson thinks it’s time to drop the facade when it comes to awards season.

“We’ve been in the business long enough to know that people say, ‘It’s just an honor to be nominated.’ No, it’s not,” Jackson said in an Associated Press video. “It’s an honor to win.”

Jackson went on to say that most people forget about Oscar-nominated performances and even some winners. “You get nominated and people say, ‘Yeah, I remember that.’ Or most people forget,” he said with a laugh. “In general, it is a competition where you have not volunteered. I wasn’t there so I could move. ‘Let me do my scene so you can remember who I was.’ They nominate you and people say, ‘What movie are you nominated for?’ What’s that thing called?’ And when it’s over and people have a hard time remembering who even won.”

Despite his celebrated and storied career, Jackson has only been nominated for an Oscar once – in 1995 pulp Fiction. In 2021 he was awarded an honorary Oscar. Last summer he said vulture The award “didn’t feel like an honor” and it “just felt like I was getting an Oscar.”

“I deserve it. I worked for it,” he continued. “I can possibly name four other times where I could have won or should have won or been nominated, but I’m okay with that. It’s mine. I have it. My name is on it.”
