PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas – Indiana lost 89-61 to Louisville in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Wednesday.

The Hoosiers play No. 3 Gonzaga on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET after the Bulldogs lost 86-78 to West Virginia on Wednesday.

Indiana coach Mike Woodson and power forward spoke to reporters after Wednesday’s game.

Here is the video and full transcript.

How he looks at everything after such a great loss, including the plan…

Woodson: “Well, it was beyond any plans. I thought they came out at the very beginning and beat us and we didn’t react. And it didn’t get any better as the ball game progressed, and as a coach I have to prepare this team better for action. I’m talking from start to finish. When I look at the stats, we just didn’t see anything from the perimeter offensively, and they had a lot to do with it because of their physicality. We can’t complain and we can’t play through it. We just have to get a little tougher. When you go 9-for-43 with your fringe players, it’s going to be hard to beat anyone in college basketball.”

About how the floodgates opened in the second half…

Woodson: “Well, defensively it’s always been our trademark and we just didn’t have it tonight. I mean, from ball protection to ball movement, we just didn’t do anything, and we were pretty good at that. “We didn’t do anything for Louisville tonight because they played extremely well. That’s the nature of learning college basketball but there is no quick turnaround. We’re playing Gonzaga and West Virginia tomorrow against the winner (loser), and we’ll have to see what we’re capable of, see if we can recover and get back on our feet.”

Why Myles Rice, Kanaan Carlyle and Trey Galloway combined for just three points…

Woodson: “Again, it’s not just these two. We went 9-for-43 with our perimeter game, and that’s hard to overcome. I mean, you’re not going to beat anyone that way, and then there are 23 turnovers on top of that. “Anything.” – That’s probably more turnovers than we ever had here when I was coach. That’s not going to beat very many teams if you play 23 times and are marginally 9-for-43. These are things that can be fixed and see if we can bounce back tomorrow.

How he tells his team to put this problem behind them and move on…

Woodson: “Well, it’s hard. These are young men and I understand. But the games aren’t going anywhere. I mean, we have a game tomorrow night and we have to go back and put them through this film session and see if we can learn from it and see if I can get them over the hump and get them going again tomorrow night because these games come so quickly and you can’t escape from them. “That’s why I won’t let them forget that game, because that was embarrassing and you have to give in. It’s to Louisville’s credit that they did their best, but we didn’t play Indiana basketball, I don’t think.”

Whether 23 ball losses can be attributed to the team’s unfamiliarity and whether they are too far behind in this area…

Woodson: “Well, I’m not using that as an excuse. We had a few games where we had some good basketball and some bad basketball, but at the end of the day you still have to care about it. The basketball if you want to score the ball. And 23 times we didn’t have the opportunity to do so because we passed it on to our opponent by hand. So we just need to come back and get better in that area and get our guys hitting shots and feeling good. We need to do better defensively and that’s unacceptable to me.

What he thought of Indiana’s competitiveness as a team…

Reneau: “I think we had great intentions. We had a great scout going into the game. I think we just didn’t execute Coach Woodson’s game plan, especially on defense, protecting certain guys and knowing what we were doing. “I made a few mistakes myself, so it wasn’t that we didn’t get along focused on the scout, but just didn’t give it our all while we were on the field.

About how he tried to turn around Indiana’s lack of concentration in the middle of the game…

Woodson: “Well, it’s not easy. We just never managed to get going. I thought we made a few shots early in the second half and they just countered right away. Then it just got out of control. We couldn’t get any shots off. Us.” They turned the ball over and there were easy throws for them. Once they got to the pad, they felt good about their game. So we need to learn from this because we can’t go back Get this game like I said We’re jumping back up tomorrow so I need to get this ball bat ready to play tomorrow night.

Whether he was frustrated again with Indiana’s low assist numbers after mentioning it after the last game…

Woodson: “Well, it’s hard. Because again, you only have 10 assists because you score 23 goals. These are occasions where you give yourself a chance to score and we just didn’t do that. That’s just – that’s what we did.’ I think since the beginning we’ve averaged 11 to 12 turnovers per game, and that’s about where you want to be, or a little less. But 23 is just way too many “To beat a lot of teams in college basketball that way.”

On his message to the team after his frustration with the Eastern Illinois game and what led to Indiana not being ready for that game…

Woodson: “Well, after that we had some hard training again, and again training is what it is. We work our asses off in practice and I push the guys to do the right thing and you hope when you get to the ballgame, everything. “Tonight we just went backwards and I just have to move forward.

About how difficult it is as a player not to push and force things when things go wrong…

Reneau: “Yeah, I mean, it just makes the game worse for us. People who do it alone just cause more turnovers. You might get a few throws here and there and I mean that’s our focus as a group. “I’m trying to play together from here and go from there.
