The National Weather Service issued an updated freeze advisory at 2:58 a.m. Thursday that is in effect until 9 a.m. for the south-central Oregon coast.

The weather service comments: “Frost formation occurs at temperatures up to 33 degrees.”

“Frost and freeze conditions could destroy crops and other sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service explains. “Take steps now to protect sensitive plants from the cold.”

Frost warning – that’s what it means

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary) when temperatures, winds and sky cover favor frost development. This is most likely when the temperature is 36 degrees or less. In some cases, the frost is severe enough to end the growing season and is then referred to as a “killing frost.”

If a freeze warning is issued for your area, cover sensitive plants before sunset to retain heat near the plants, or bring plants indoors overnight if possible, according to the weather service.
