Here is today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th century novels) for Monday, November 25, 2024 (Season 41, Game 56):

In this novel, the mention of a new railway section between Rothal and Allahabad in India leads to an argument and then a bet

(correct answer among participants)

Today’s Danger! Participant:

Carolyn Gramlinga science journalist from Washington, DC
Carolyn Gramling on Jeopardy!
Kevin Laskowskian Episcopal priest from Falls Church, Virginia
Kevin Laskowski on Jeopardy!
Adam Hersha lawyer from Brooklyn, New York (1 day total: $29,000)
Adam Hersh on Jeopardy!

Andy’s thoughts before the game:

Welcome to week 12 of season 41 of Dangerwhere Adam Hersh returns as 1-day champion. The announcement of the Tournament of Champions field (and to a lesser extent the Champions Wildcard field) last Monday added a little more excitement to today’s match. Adam’s 1-day total is just $200 less than Evan Dorey’s, and if Adam doesn’t win today, it’s unknown whether Adam’s total will be enough for the Champions Wildcard.

Viewers should also be cautioned to check their local listings for later this week, as there are often significant reservations on both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday due to various professional and college football games.

The inciting incident in the plot of Jules Verne’s novel Around the world in eighty days was a newspaper article that mentioned that the opening of a new railway section in India would make it possible to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. Phileas Fogg, a wealthy English gentleman and member of the Reform Club, makes a £20,000 bet – half his fortune – that he can actually travel around the world in 80 days.

Interestingly, the novel was first published in the fall of 1872 Le Tempswith the publication of its ending intentionally coinciding with Fogg’s December 21st “deadline” included in his book; Furthermore, due to the contemporary setting, many readers actually believed that the voyage was taking place and began placing bets on its outcome.
