The game maker falsely communicated the probability of paid items and refunded part of the purchase amount to the injured user. This is because a user of the Nexon-powered multi-access role-playing game (MMORPG) Maple Story eventually won a lawsuit because he was upset about the probability manipulation.

On the 28th, the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court (Judge Oh Seok-joon) dismissed Nexon’s appeal in a lawsuit brought by Maple Story user A against Nexon Korea, ruling that the plaintiff should refund part of the purchase amount of the item. As a result, Nexon will pay 572,265 won to A.

In this case, a court battle began when it was discovered that Nexon had manipulated the probability of boosting equipment with the probability item “Dice” sold in 2021 so that it was lower than the actual advertised probability. The three most preferred skills by users are set so that they do not overlap at all.

Mr. A filed a lawsuit and said, “I purchased items through Nexon’s scam and some of the game events were manipulated.” He added, “Please return the 11 million won you spent on the game.” In doing so, Mr. A had to Mr. A received a trial exemption, a system under which the court, as an employee, suspends or waives the costs necessary for the trial.

The game company incorrectly reported the probability of paid items and refunded part of the purchase price.

In the first proceedings, Mr A.’s claim was not upheld. However, the second trial found that Nexon intentionally and actively deceived users. However, he ordered a refund of only 5%, reflecting the multiple changes in the amount of A’s claim and the purchase of the cube despite having knowledge of the tampering.

The second court ruled: “Blocking the likelihood of items is the result of Nexon’s deliberate and planned discontinuation,” adding: “It is not a simple failure to block the likelihood of items with high user preference but not announce them.” “

Nexon appealed, but the Supreme Court dismissed it. The Supreme Court ruled that Nexon’s appeal could not be a legitimate ground of appeal set forth in the Small Claims Trial Act governing the handling of small claims cases. This is because small claims cases can only be appealed when the constitution or laws are not properly followed and a wrong decision is made.

“In similar cases, we have accepted the consumer agency’s arbitration plan for collective disputes and also provide compensation to users who have not requested arbitration,” a Nexon official said. “We will continue to do our best to restore users’ trust and provide better services.”
