Silvia Pinal, an actress during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, has died. She was 93.

Pinal was hospitalized earlier this month for a urinary tract infection. Mexico’s culture minister confirmed Pinal’s death.

“The Ministry of Culture of the Mexican government regrets the death of the main actress Silvia Pinal,” said the statement published on X. “With a career spanning more than six decades, she has appeared in more than 60 films and plays. Her legacy lives on as a cornerstone of cinema, theater and television in Mexico. May she rest in peace.”

Pinal was born on September 12, 1931 in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. She studied acting at the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature. Pinal’s acting debut came in 1949 with the comedy Dos Pesos la dejada.

In her debut during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, Pinal starred alongside legendary actor Pedro Infante La Mujer que yo perdí in 1949. Pinal also shared the screen with Mexican film stars such as Cantinflas The bouncer (1950), Tin Tan in El Rey del Barrio and Sara Garcia.

He received Pinal’s first major acting award after his role in ” A rincón cerca del cielowon the Ariel Award, the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar. In the film she again played the main role alongside Pedro Infante.

After her success in Mexico, Pinal became internationally known and starred in the Spanish film Las Locuras de Barbara (1958) and in the music film Charleston. Pinal later devoted herself to cinema in Italy, where she played the leading role Uomini and Nobiluomini (1959), in which she appeared together with Vittorio de Sica and Elke Sommer.

Pinal’s only appearance in a Hollywood production came in 1969 when she starred in the film alongside Burt Reynolds Hai! Directed by Samuel Fuller. She also worked with Anthony Quinn and Charles Bronson in the French film Weapons for San Sebastian (1968).

In her later years, Pinal became a successful television producer. She created and presented Woman, Casos de la Vida Reala series that dealt with real-life issues that women face in today’s society. Pinal also appeared in telenovelas Carita de Angel (2000), Fuego en la Sangre (2008), Soy Tu Dueña (2010) and Mi Marido Tiene Familia (2017).
