First half

15:23 remaining: Syracuse 2, Cornell 10

Cornell opened the game with a 10-0 run, including two three-pointers. The Big Red’s defense stifled the Orange for the first three and a half minutes of the game.

Donnie Freeman ended the scoring drought with a fade away from the post.

Before the game

Syracuse (3-2) returns to the Dome to host one of its toughest opponents ever in Cornell (4-2).

These two teams know each other well. Since their first meeting in the 1900-01 season, SU and Cornell have met 129 times. The Orange have won the last 43 games in a row, including a game last December in which they beat the Big Red 81-70.

However, Syracuse hasn’t been as successful lately as it was during the Cornell series. Last week they suffered two straight losses at the UKG Legends Classic in Brooklyn. First a 70-66 loss to Texas, then a 79-74 loss to Texas Tech. The Orange often played from the back in these games. They suffered from slow starts early in the season, and it proved to be too much to overcome against tougher Power Four opponents.

JJ Starling, now the second-leading scorer in the ACC after some big scoring performances, scored 27 points in the recent loss to the Red Raiders. Chris Bell added 22 points.

Cornell enters the contest with an 84-68 win over Iona. Junior Cooper Noard had a career-high night with 20 points. Sophomore Jake Fiegen also looks to be a key contributor for the Big Red as he averages nearly 16 points a night.

One thing to keep an eye on: Syracuse’s efforts on defense

Through five games, SU is the worst defensive team in the entire ACC. They allow almost 80 points per night. That’s a twenty point difference from Duke’s number one defense. While the Orange certainly don’t have the high-end talent that Duke has in terms of multiple NBA-level defenders, many mistakes come from missed rotations and transition points. An improved Syracuse defense will be crucial with conference play just around the corner.
