MARYLAND – Maryland is in for a rainy week, with wintry temperatures for Thanksgiving and Black Friday, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang says the chance of the freezing cold bringing snow is low for Sunday, but that’s something to watch out for over the weekend.

Unusually cold temperatures on Sunday, with highs in the mid to upper 30s, mean there is a “risk of snow showers or severe weather during the first half of the day,” the post said. “If they occur, they shouldn’t be a big deal or have a big impact on travel plans.”

The good news is that Wednesday’s busy travel day will be quiet with the first round of rain expected to arrive Tuesday morning and then rain will begin again overnight Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Thanksgiving will be wet across Maryland, with an 80 percent chance of rain, mostly before 1 p.m

Forecasters are still expecting a Thanksgiving storm, with two different scenarios possible. Depending on which of these events occurs, the severity of the storm can vary.

“A storm could complicate public transportation for those traveling locally through parts of the Midwest and Northeast on Thanksgiving Day. Even those looking for Black Friday deals could face travel challenges, said Tyler Roys, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.

However, the National Weather Service said it wasn’t expected to be too heavy, “mostly just soothing rain.”

The storm could bring gusty winds that wouldn’t normally be severe but could affect parades in New York City and Philadelphia.

And if the core of the storm moves far enough north, it could bring some snowflakes with it too. However, like the recent snow, it may also be limited to higher elevations.

“For some, there may still be a chance of waking up to a white Thanksgiving or seeing snowflakes flying in areas that don’t typically see snow for the late November holiday,” Roys said.

It should be dry on Friday. However, temperatures will remain low and windy, giving the weekend a wintry feel.
