Sorry Groot, an Avenger can’t stand the beloved Guardian of the Galaxy Sprout

When Banner’s unconscious body is nearly eaten by zombies, Groot hits him to wake him up and release the Hulk. Groot tries to explain what’s going on and keep the Hulk focused on continuing his journey, but the Instead, Hulk gets annoyed with him for just saying, “I’m Groot“over and over again.

The Hulk chases Groot out of the subway after Groot realizes that all he has to do is talk to lead him to Avengers Tower and shouts that he will do it “Make annoying tree men into toothpicks.”

It’s incredibly sad that Groot will never truly be able to have a meaningful friendship with the Hulk just because he can’t control what he says. “I’m Groot” is literally the only thing he can say, and the Hulk doesn’t understand that it’s his way of speaking. What’s worse is that the Hulk has a long list of grievances with his team over the years, including his other half. Bruce Banner. The fact that he mostly gets angry at Groot shows that he is the only hero he actively despisesno matter what happens.

The only thing really stopping Groot and the Hulk from ever getting together seems to be Rocket Raccoon. Later in the same issue, Groot holds out a stuffed animal of his missing friend, to which the Hulk responds with a laugh after the doll utters one of Rocket’s insults. Rocket may be a key to Hulk and Groot getting alongsince Rocket and Groot are practically inseparable. However, with Rocket out of the picture in this story, there is nothing that can contain the Hulk’s true feelings for Groot as the two clash while trying to save Earth from the zombie plague.

The worst thing about this revelation about the Hulk’s feelings for the beloved Guardian is that it comes not too long afterward Groot had already experienced a devastating conversation with Captain America about his performance in the team. Marvel Zombies: Dawn of DecayThe first issue of Captain America features a moment where Captain America expresses his disappointment in Groot and states that he expects better from him as the heart of his interstellar team. It’s not nearly as harsh as the Hulk’s rejection, but it’s still enough to make Groot feel like he doesn’t live up to the standard of being a proper hero.
