Quick Wrap – Purdue 80, Ole Miss 78 | The Myles Colvin game

If you’re having a career day, you might as well make your last bucket count. That’s exactly what Myles Colvin did, finding Braden Smith’s airball with two seconds left, catching it and putting it back up to secure an 80-78 victory and win the Rady Children’s Invitational on Friday in San Diego.

Myles Colvin’s game-winning putt capped his career-high 20 points.

Purdue needed every single one of those 20 points after jumping out to a 25-8 lead in the first half, only to eventually relinquish the lead in the second half after Ole Miss made six of its first seven three-pointers to start the half. Ole Miss led by 7:75:68 with less than nine minutes to play.

The game ended with a goal by Colvin and began with a goal by Myles Colvin. Colvin had the first basket of the game, stole a pass and used it to dunk. On the next possession, Colvin made the first of three three-pointers on the night for the sophomore.

Purdue’s Braden Smith took the early lead by knocking down four three-pointers in the first half. Smith finished the game with 18 points, a game-high 11 assists and 6 rebounds.

But it was Trey Kaufman-Renn who once again led Purdue’s offense, dropping 25 points, 15 of them in the first half. Kaufman-Renn also led Purdue with 13 rebounds.

But when it looked like Ole Miss was going to run Purdue out of the building, it was Myles Colvin who literally sprinted in transition and brought Purdue back into the game.

An Ole Miss missed three while trailing 75-68 but bounced well off the rim and Braden Smith was in control. Smith immediately burst onto the field, with Camden Heide to his right and Colvin to his left. Smith hit Colvin with a no-look pass and Colvin finished with a foul, cutting the game to four points. That free throw brought Colvin’s career to its pinnacle.

Colvin would then give Purdue the lead back on an Ole Miss turnover that bounced off a leg and away from the basket. Colvin got to the ball first, kept going, and Euro marched through traffic for his second layup and foul of the half. Purdue would take a 76-75 lead with less than three minutes to play.

Smith would add a sure layup before a costly turnover would allow Ole Miss to tie the game with a dunk with 14.8 seconds to play.

Purdue recorded Smith’s number, who went straight to a screen and fired a mid-range falling shot near the right baseline. The shot was short and missed the left edge, which worked for Purdue because that’s where Colvin sprinted in to follow the play. Colvin was alone with the ball in hand and two seconds on the clock. From there, he was able to gently move things forward, giving Purdue another tournament win during the holiday week.

Purdue scored 80 points, 76 of those points coming from Fletcher Loyer (13 points), Smith, Kaufman-Renn and Colvin.
