Set 3: Penn State Volleyball takes a 2-1 lead in the game

Just the stats: It wasn’t a good shot for either team. Penn State is still under .100 and Nebraska is under .200. Caroline Jurevicius leads all hitters with 13 kills. Andi Jackson leads Nebraska with eight kills and has a .727 hitting percentage. Harper Murray also has eight kills.

Penn State 25-22: Jurevicius ends Nebraska’s mini streak with her 13th kill. A scoring error by Nebraska puts Penn State two points away from the set, but a kill by Jackson closes the gap. A service error gives Penn State set point. Jackson extends the game with a kill. But the murder of Camryn Hannah on the Nebraska block is over. Penn State leads the game 2-1. Each set was won on the same side of the net.

Penn State 21-10: The Huskers get within one point thanks to kills from Murray and Jackson. Penn State timeout.

Penn State 21-18: Jurevicius increases her kill total with a soft ding over the Nebraska block. Huskers call timeout.

Penn State 19-16: Penn State takes a 13-9 lead after a Mendelson/Jurevicius win by Murray. They extend the lead to four points after a block from Starck/Taylor. Nebraska gets to 17-15 thanks to great defense, but a service error increases Penn State’s lead.

Penn State 10-8: Nebraska took a 3-0 lead, but the Nittany Lions combined some timely goals with errors from the Huskers to tie the game. The teams trade kills, blocks and errors as neither team is more than a point ahead until two blocks from Trammell/Jurevicius and Trammell/Mruzik give the Nittany Lions a two point lead. Nebraska calls time out.

Nebraska volleyball dominates in the second set

Just the stats: Penn State’s Caroline Jurevicius leads all hitters with seven kills in straight sets and Maggie Mendelson has six. Taylor Landfair leads Nebraska with six kills and Rebekah Allick has five.

Nebraska 25-14: The Huskers found their hitting and blocking skills in the second set. And it couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Nittany Lions, whose batting average dropped to .081.

Nebraska 19-12: A shot from Merritt Beason in the back row was so hard that it ricocheted off a Penn State player and went across the court into the stands, taking a 17-9 lead. Penn State capitalized on two Nebraska hitting errors and Izzy Starck followed up a Husker pancake with a devastating deep kill to put the Nittany Lions up 19-12. Time out in Nebraska.

Nebraska 15-7: The Huskers appear to have shaken off the travel rust they had in the first set. And the shots that worked for Penn State in the first set to keep Nebraska off balance aren’t working in this one. The Huskers are killed by Landfair, Jackson and Allick. Penn State calls a timeout and chants of “Go Big Red” are almost as loud as “We Are…Penn State.”

Nebraska 9-4: Nebraska takes a 4-2 lead, but Penn State uses an ace from Gillian Grimes and a kill from Mruzik to pull within one. For the next five points, it’s the Huskers who extend their lead with kills from Andi Jackson, Taylor Landfair and a roof block from Allick. Penn State calls timeout.

Penn State volleyball wins set 1

Just the stats: Penn State led Nebraska in kills 17-13, but their hitting percentages are nearly identical at just over .200. Jurevicius and Mendelson led all hitters with five kills each.

Penn State 25-21: Hannah’s kill on the line gives the Nittany Lions the first point, but Nebraska extends the game with Bergen Reilly’s kill in the back corner. Jess Mruzik gives Penn State the opener with a devastating kill from the middle.

Penn State 23-19: Nebraska challenges a no-touch call on a hit by Harper Murray that was called long. The decision stands and the Nittany Lions take a four-point lead.

Penn State 22-19: Just as Nebraska was even at 19, the Nittany Lions wrapped up kills from Hannah and Jurevicius around a Husker error to force a Nebraska timeout.

Penn State 17-14: An ace from Jess Mruzik increases the Nittany Lions’ lead, but a long serve hands serve to the Huskers.

Penn State 19-15: Camryn Hannah’s kill leads to Nebraska’s timeout.

Penn State 15-14: Jurevicius and Maggie Mendelson lead the Nittany Lions with four kills each. Rebekah Allick leads the Huskers with four kills.

Penn State, Nebraska tied at 11: Nebraska used its height advantage to extend its lead to two, but a hitting error and a devastating hit from Penn State’s Caroline Jurevicius brought them level again, this time at 11. This will be the type of game we’ve come to expect between two leaders had. 5 teams.

Nebraska 7-6: Penn State took an early lead and Nebraska didn’t get its first point until a no-touch challenge was decided 4-1. The Huskers’ hitters began to find their rhythm after winning that challenge, taking their first lead at 7-6 on a block from Harper Murray.

It will be a full house

Forget it’s Black Friday. Forget that there are no classes at school.

More than half an hour before the first serve, the reception hall is almost full. Fans are constantly told to make sure to sit on a number as there is no extra space there.

As you can imagine, there is a lot of blue and white in the stands. But there’s also a pretty decent amount of red in the stands.

Nebraska players warm up in white and pink T-shirts, clearly a reference to Penn State coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley, who is battling breast cancer.

Nebraska’s shots are made by a handful of 6-foot players.

Sophomore 6-2 OH Harper Murray is the leading hitter with 313 kills. She also has 217 excavations. Merritt Beason (6-4 OH) has 288 kills, Andi Jackson (6-3 MB) has 231 kills and Taylor Landfair (6-5 OH) has 165 kills.

Sophomore Bergen Reilly (6-1) will lead the attack. She has 1,075 assists, 279 digs and 20 aces. Senior Lexi Rodriguez is one of the best liberos in the country and leads the Huskers with 365 digs.

For the Nittany Lions, Jess Mruzik leads the attack at 6-1 OH and has 429 kills to go along with 242 digs. Camryn Hannah (6-2 OH) has 376 kills, Taylor Trammell (6-2 MB) has 213 kills and Caroline Jurevicius (6-2 OH) has 168 kills.

If that last name sounds familiar to Penn State fans, it should. She is the redshirt freshman daughter of former Nittany Lion wide receiver Joe Jurevicius.

Penn State’s offense is fueled by 6-1 freshman setter Izzy Starck, who has 1,169 assists and 271 digs. Gillian Grimes leads the defense with 414 digs.

It won’t be official, but the Big Ten women’s volleyball champions will essentially be determined Friday night in State College.

Nebraska volleyball faces Maryland (4-14) on Saturday, but will stay ahead of the game for the conference title with a win at Penn State on Friday. The teams share the title if the Nittany Lions win.

The Huskers are undefeated in conference play and are second in the national rankings behind Pitt. Their only loss came at SMU in the fourth game of the season.

Penn State has two losses, including a 3-0 conference loss to Wisconsin, which was defeated by Nebraska on Saturday night. The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 4 nationally.

Friday’s game begins at 5:00 p.m. ET and will be shown on the Big Ten Network.
