Mike Vrabel: Urban Meyer asked: “Do I know you?” Despite two years of collaboration | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

Mike Vrabel has joined a list of people Urban Meyer apparently doesn’t know, even though the two have worked together before on this case.

Appearance on the Manningcast during Monday Night Football between the Baltimore Ravens and the Los Angeles Chargers, Vrabel told a story about how Meyer asked him, “Do I know you?” during a 2021 game between the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Vrabel told the story because Owen Wilson was a guest at the start of the show, recounting how Meyer asked him the same question while playing on the former Ohio State coach’s team during a prominent flag football game.

There are many lessons to be learned from Meyer’s short tenure as an NFL head coach, but one of the most surprising is that he appeared to have very little knowledge of anything that was happening at that level of football.

A March 2022 story by Jayson Jenks and Mike Sando of The Athletic about Meyer’s tumultuous tenure with the Jaguars reported that he was “unfamiliar” with star players in the NFL during a six-month deep dive into the league.

The group of players Meyer was reportedly unfamiliar with included Aaron Donald.

“‘Who’s that 99 guy on the Rams?’ According to a source, Meyer asked a staff member during the season: “I heard he could be a problem for us,” Jenks and Sando wrote.

Meyer disputed the accuracy of this report, calling it “so silly.”

Vrabel’s comment lends at least some credence to the suggestion that Meyer simply may not have a very good memory. He worked on Meyer’s staff at Ohio State University from 2011 to 2013 before becoming a coach in the NFL.

The last game Meyer coached for the Jaguars was against Vrabel and the Titans. Tennessee defeated Jacksonville 20-0 on December 12, 2021. Jaguars owner Shad Khan announced four days later that Meyer had been fired.
