SAFFORD – The official kickoff to the Gila Valley holiday season begins Friday with the 23rd annual Merry Main Street and Tree Lighting Ceremony in Safford.

It begins at 5:30 p.m. with the Freeport-McMoRan tree lighting ceremony in front of Safford City Hall. This year the tree will be lit by Safford Mayor Richard Ortega.

Once the lights are turned on, the Ponderosa Air Ambulance Merry Main Street will begin hosting events along Safford’s Main Street, including the opportunity for children to share their Christmas wishes with Santa at the historic Safford Theater.

Double R Sound will once again ensure everything can be heard on the Kempton Chevrolet stage, including Christmas karaoke.

Other activities include s’mores in front of Copper and Cotton Lifestyle Co.; cookie decorating at Main Street Café; Write letters to Santa Claus and talk to Mrs. Claus at Willow’s Cottage; and sledding on the snow hill on the lawn in front of Safford Town Hall, courtesy of Ginaveve’s Market Place.

All events and activities for the whole family are free.

The next day is “Shop Small Saturday,” when residents are encouraged to return downtown and visit local shops and restaurants that support events like Merry Main Street and the Holiday Light Parade, which takes place on Dec. 14 at Safford’s will take place on Main Street.
