A man suspected of a domestic violence incident led Los Angeles police on a chase that ended with a shooting in the West Adams neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

The chase began just after noon when officers first responded to the domestic incident at Gaffey Street and 19th Street in San Pedro.

According to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, someone on a public transit bus called 911 to report an assault and said the perpetrator followed the bus in a white Maserati. Police caught up with the driver on the 110 Freeway, where he refused to stop, officials said.

The chase continued into the West Adams area. Sky5 was broadcasting live on television as the suspect pulled into the rear parking lot of an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Jefferson Boulevard. He got out of the sports car and immediately walked down the alley toward officers wearing a hoodie.

Dramatic footage then shows the man appearing to pull two handguns from his pockets and aim them at officers, who fire several shots, causing him to fall to the ground.

Chief McDonnell said the shooter survived but was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. No officers were injured, McDonnell said.

“It happened very quickly … thank God no officers were injured,” McDonnell said during an afternoon news conference. “Things like this show what our officers have to deal with there every day: facing a suspect who will do what he has to do to get away.”

Three women could be seen being led away in handcuffs by officers, although their connection to the persecution was not immediately clear.

A neighbor said the suspect lived at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
