LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – As America’s streets become clogged with holiday travelers, many people are packing into grocery stores to do last-minute shopping for Thanksgiving dinner.

But a holiday feast can add up on a receipt. That’s why Lincoln grocery stores like Russ’s Market do what they can to keep costs down.

“Thanksgiving is a really important holiday for us and our customers,” said Marty Jarvis, director of marketing for B&R Stores. “It brings families together and there are recipes that are passed down from generation to generation and we want to be the source where people can find the items they are looking for.”

According to the American Farm Bureau, the price of a Thanksgiving dinner has actually fallen this year: It was $61.17 last year and is $58.08 this year. Of course, this is just a national average.

“Across the state, it will vary greatly depending on the community,” said Ansley Fellers, executive director of the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association. “So if we have really small businesses with very low margins and higher costs, they might be a little higher.”

To save costs, Jarvis recommends people follow the Trusted Store Ad, a kind of map for the best deals on holiday meals.

“Many of our in-store specials offer great savings off regular prices, so you can have more for your family,” Jarvis said.

Local stores typically rely on wholesale cooperatives with nationwide purchasing power to keep their prices competitive with giants like Walmart.

“I think the most important thing is to meet people where they are, and in that way, I think (grocers) play a big role in how much people enjoy the holidays now,” Fellers said.

Russ’s Lincoln locations are open until Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.
