LEXINGTON – The Kentucky and Western Kentucky programs are among the most successful in college basketball history. The Wildcats are No. 1 with 2,403 wins through Monday; The Hilltoppers are tied for 16th (alongside BYU) with 1,897 points.

But despite programs dating back more than a century, Great Britain and WKU have only met seven times.

That number increases to eight tonight as Kentucky welcomes its fellow Bluegrass State school to Rupp Arena.

The Wildcats lead the series 5-2 and won the last game 95-60 on December 22, 2021 in Lexington. But Western Kentucky got the better of Great Britain in their first meeting, defeating Adolph Rupp’s club 107-83. in a semifinal of the NCAA Tournament Mideast Regional in Athens, Georgia, in 1971. The Hilltoppers subsequently secured their first (and only) Final Four berth that year. (However, that Final Four run later was vacated.)

The pair faced off again 15 years later in March Madness, with Kentucky winning 71-64 in the second round. They didn’t meet in the regular season until 1990, when then-UK coach Rick Pitino agreed to play his former assistant Ralph Willard, then WKU coach. The Wildcats earned an 84-70 win at Freedom Hall.
