Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez is likely to start the Reds’ next three games without Diogo Jota and the Uruguayan will need to impress in those games to avoid being sold in the summer.

Nunez has had a mixed time at Anfield since his arrival in 2022. He was praised for his tireless threat but complained about his poor finishing. This inconsistency has seen him fall below Arne Slot in the pecking order, with the Dutchman preferring Jota over him so far this season.

However, the Portuguese striker has been out since the end of October, giving Nunez a number of games in which he has impressed Slot. Despite scoring in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa last time out, the unpredictable number nine is yet to prove himself and will therefore need to perform in the next few games before Jota returns from injury.

Since Nunez moved from Benfica for £85m in the summer of 2022, opinions have been divided across Merseyside. The Uruguay international has demonstrated his incredible athleticism and agility, constantly causing problems for opposition defenses, prompting Alan Shearer to describe him as “unbelievable”.

On the other hand, Nunez has not demonstrated his ability to score the number of goals required for his inflated price tag. With 36 goals in 110 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, he is under pressure to score more often.

According to Premier Injuries, Jota is expected to return to action on December 4 following his chest injury. This means Nunez is likely to be named in Slot’s starting lineup for games against Southampton, Real Madrid and Manchester City this week.

This run could be the 25-year-old’s last chance to stake a claim to start above Jota on a more regular basis. He cannot afford to produce three wasteful performances in a row at such a crucial point in the season or he could find himself out of favor at Anfield.

If Slot doesn’t see what he wants from the former Benfica man in the next few games, he could even look to sanction Nunez’s departure in an upcoming transfer window. GMS sources revealed back in October that Barcelona were interested in signing him.
