How to see balloons early in NYC

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a centuries-old tradition. But for some, the preparation and inflation of the balloons is as big an event as the parade itself, which celebrates its 100th anniversary on Thursday.

The inflation of the spectacle’s 17 character balloons and 15 historical balloons can be viewed the day before Thanksgiving.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Balloon Inflation Celebration

Interested spectators are welcome to visit the American Museum of Natural History on Wednesday, November 27th from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. where there will be a balloon viewing trail that goes around the museum.

To attend the event, go to West 72nd Street and Central Park West. The tour lasts at least 45 minutes, according to event details listed on CentralPark.com. Leave the event at West 81st Street and Central Park West.

What new balloons have been added to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?

This year’s parade will feature a new Minnie Mouse balloon, joining fellow Disney balloons Mickey, Pluto, Donald Duck and Goofy.

Other balloons expected in the parade include Extraordinary Noorah, Elf on the Shelf, DreamWorks’ Gabby, Goku from “Dragon Ball Z”, Nickelodeon’s Marshall and Spin Master, and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Tips and tricks for the best balloon watching experience

CentralPark.com has provided several rules and recommendations for participating in balloon inflation:

The following items are strictly prohibited: bags or backpacks larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches; Cooler; alcoholic beverages; chairs; weapons; drones; pets; Umbrellas.
Participants should be prepared to be screened before entering the balloon viewing area.
Strollers are not prohibited. However, CentralPark.com recommends leaving the strollers at home. “While strollers are not prohibited, it is difficult to push them through the galleries,” the event website states. “Try baby carriers or wait until children are older and can tolerate standing for long periods of time.”
Eat before the event or bring snacks if you get hungry easily. The viewing path to inflate the balloon takes at least 45 minutes.

When: Wednesday, November 27th, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: American Museum of Natural History, 200 Central Park West in Manhattan. Enter the inflation watch area at West 72nd Street and Central Park West. The viewing path then winds around the American Museum of Natural History, where viewers exit West 81st Street and Central Park West.
