No, the murder of the six-year-old on Christmas Day 1996 is common knowledge to most people who were alive at the time of the murder. The new documentary from Netflix Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey? re-examines the case all these years later, only to confirm the same conclusion: there is still no clue as to who killed the young beauty queen and why.

JonBenét Ramsey’s body was found on December 26, 1996 by her father, John Ramsay, in the basement of the house where the family lived. Just hours earlier, her mother, Patsy Ramsey, called police to report a ransom note that had been discovered at the bottom of a home’s stairs. The police arrived at the house, and after the body was initially not found, JonBenét was found, starting an investigation that would focus on the girl’s family, Patsy, John, and especially her brother Burke, for many years.

Today her father, who plays an important role in the documentary, is vigorously campaigning for a further investigation into the murder. Meanwhile, JonBenét Ramsey’s brother Burke has decided to stay away from the cameras. For most of his life he had to deal with allegations that he was responsible for his sister’s murder, although he was exonerated by DNA evidence in 2008. In 2016, Burke Ramsey sued CBS for airing a two-part special that theorized that he murdered his sister because she ate some of his snack. The lawsuit was settled out of court.

How did Patsy Ramsy die?

Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in 2006. She was first diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer in 1993, when she was 36 years old. After treatment, she was in remission for nine years until the cancer returned in 2002. Four years later she lost her battle with cancer and died on June 24. Patsy was at her father’s house with her husband John by her side when she died. She is buried at St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia, next to her daughter JonBenét.

Her death occurred two years before her family was officially exonerated of JonBenét’s murder thanks to DNA evidence. In an interview with 9Newstold Patsy about her theories about her daughter’s death. The family had originally left the house on Christmas Day to visit friends for dinner. According to Patsy, an intruder may have then entered the home, adding, “It’s possible that this person was watching our home, watching us leave, and came into the home at that point.”

“There were several hours where he was able to familiarize himself with the house, where JonBenét’s bedroom was, where our bedroom was, where the basement was, before we returned home. “I believe the ransom note was written at that time and I believe the person was still there when we got home that night,” she also said in the interview.
