Here are some important tips from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) to help you stay safe while shopping this holiday season.

Stay alert and alert

• Keep your head and pay attention to your surroundings.
• Avoid distractions like using your phone while navigating crowded stores and parking lots.
• If you notice something suspicious or something feels uncomfortable, trust your instincts.

Secure your valuables

• To protect your wallet, credit cards and ID, keep them in a zippered pocket or close to your body.
• It is advisable to avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
• Opt for shoulder bags or zippered bags to deter pickpockets.

Protect your purchases

• Avoid leaving shopping bags or valuables visible in the car. Instead, lock them in the trunk or take them home before continuing your shopping.
• Also, keep receipts and serial numbers of expensive items in case of theft.
