Thanks to its passively isolating in-ear design, low-distortion driver and amplifier, and newer Apple H2 chip, the AirPods Pro are the best-sounding “truly wireless” earbuds for iPhone users. In addition to being one of two AirPods earbuds with active noise cancellation, the AirPods Pro also includes useful features such as “Adaptive Transparency Mode,” which allows you to hear your surroundings without having to remove the earbuds, and “Conversation Mode,” which automatically amplifies the voices of your conversation partners. The newer, second-generation AirPods Pro replace the Lightning port with a more universal USB Type-C port so you don’t have to mix up cables, and also include a MagSafe charging case as standard.

Should you choose the AirPods Pro over the AirPods 4 with ANC?

Normally I would recommend the AirPods 4 ANC as they are usually $70 cheaper. However, if you ignore the price, the AirPods Pro are a superior earbud. Both have active noise cancellation, but the AirPods Pro produce better sound and more effective noise cancellation due to their design. The AirPods 4 ANC is an open-ear style earbud with non-adjustable tips. They are designed to sit just outside the ear, which is comfortable but allows a lot of sound to escape and ambient noise to enter.

The AirPods Pro, on the other hand, are in-ear headphones that sit directly in the ear canal, sealing the passage and passively isolating it from the surrounding air. Adjustable tips are included to accommodate different sized ears and ensure you get the correct, sealing fit which is very important to achieve the best performance. At this price, the only compelling reason to still choose the AirPods 4 is ANC if you don’t like the intrusive nature of in-ear earbuds in general.

The AirPods Max are the crown jewel of Apple’s AirPods lineup, but that quality doesn’t come cheap. Normally the wireless headset costs $550, but for Black Friday, Amazon dropped the price to $399. That’s a $150 discount (28%) and the lowest price we’ve ever seen. Unlike its AirPods brothers, the AirPods Max is a more traditional over-ear headphone. If you’re not a fan of earbuds, then the best Hi-Fi noise canceling headphones of 2024 might be right up your alley.
