Freed hostage Mia Schem, 22, is celebrating a year after her release from captivity with a new chapter in her life: an engagement to a childhood friend.

Schem and her partner Yinon Hasson, 24, a longtime figure in her life, enjoyed a trip to Caesarea, where Hasson got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.

Schem accepted and shared the news of their engagement.

Last August, she posed in an Israeli designer’s wedding dress campaign, openly showing off the scars she suffered from the Oct. 7 shooting in the town of Re’im, where she was kidnapped.

Plan released

Schem was released in the first round of hostage releases in November. Outside the UN Security Council, she spoke to the press with UN Ambassador Danny Danon. Both strongly criticized the UN’s response to the hostages.

“I stand here to echo the cries of the 101 hostages who have been in hell for over a year. Look at me! I am proof that they can still be saved!” she said. “At this moment, 200 feet underground, with no air, no light, no hope, my friends are still being held by monsters.

“My heart is still with them, trapped in Gaza. I stand here and demand that you all take them home now!”
