Just being associated with the name Walter Payton leaves one in awe, but for an FCS football player, he will receive the 2024 Walter Payton Award as national offensive player of the year. The winner will emerge from 35 finalists and take their place in a distinguished list of previous winners.


Stats Perform has announced a list of 35 finalists for the 2024 Walter Payton Award, given to the national offensive player of the year in Division I FCS college football.

The award, now in its 38th year and affectionately known as the FCS Heisman, is named after legendary running back Walter Payton, who played at Jackson State during his Hall of Fame career. Previous honorees include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, Jimmy Garoppolo, Cooper Kupp and Trey Lance.

All 13 FCS conferences are represented by a finalist. The winner will be selected by a national voting panel and announced at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet on January 4 in Frisco, Texas.
