The last time a running back won the NFL MVP was 12 seasons ago. Adrian Peterson did it after running for more than 2,000 yards.

The last time a running back won MVP without scoring 2,000 rushing yards in a season or breaking an NFL single-season touchdown record was Emmitt Smith in 1993.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley will make it difficult for voters to pick the best available quarterback for MVP this season.

Barkley added another great game to his remarkable season, and this one came in prime time. Barkley was unstoppable as he ran across, around and past the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley rushed for 255 yards and 1,500 yards from scrimmage this season and the Eagles posted a 37-20 victory. Barkley’s rushing total was the ninth-highest in a game in NFL history and the highest in Eagles history.

The win brings Philadelphia’s season record to 9-2. With Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders, the Eagles lead the division by three games with three games remaining.

Barkley could reach 2,000 rushing yards this season. He’s on pace for 1,392 yards in 11 games. With six games to go, that’s a career high for Barkley. That could earn him enough MVP votes to win the award. But as the Eagles head toward an NFC East championship, Barkley’s case is only getting stronger, regardless of whether he reaches the magic number of 2,000.

The New York Giants blew it this offseason. Saquon Barkley is clearly a first-team All-Pro this season, as is Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney, who is tied for the NFL’s lead in interceptions. The Giants let both of them leave as free agents this offseason.

Worse, the Giants made Barkley look like a mostly average running back for many seasons. The same Barkley who electrified the NFL and revitalized Philadelphia’s offense didn’t even break the 1,000-yard rushing mark with the Giants last season. Barkley must be excited to see legitimate NFL action this season.

The Eagles don’t typically spend much on running backs, but made Barkley an exception. You must have seen how the Giants wasted his talent and how their outstanding offensive line was able to turn him into a star again.

Barkley has been dominant since the Eagles’ Week 1 win over the Packers. The Eagles put in another brilliant performance on Sunday evening.

With less than three minutes to play, the game was largely under control, but Barkley broke off a 72-yard touchdown run to cap his great night. It’s not easy to break long touchdowns like that in the NFL, but Barkley has made it look routine this season.

Since the bye week, Philadelphia is 7-0. If there is an NFC team that could travel to Detroit and knock out the Lions in the playoffs, the Eagles are the obvious answer.

Barkley prevailed on Sunday, but the defense has quickly become one of the NFL’s best. The Rams have a potent offense when healthy, and in a crucial second quarter they had -6 yards on four possessions. As Philadelphia embraced new coordinator Vic Fangio’s plan, there was steady improvement on that side of the ball.

And the offense has many options. Barkley just transformed the Eagles’ running game. Now they have a superstar capable of big, powerful plays, a player who can, in most cases, turn a failed play into something positive.

If that sounds like a good MVP candidate, that’s because he is. Defenses can’t stop Barkley this season. The only thing that could possibly stop him is the recent history of MVP voting.

  • The Eagles win their seventh straight game behind dominant Saquon Barkley

  • Saquon’s 255-yard night is the ninth-best single-game rushing performance in NFL history

Barkley has played 10 games with at least 145 rushing yards in his career. He played five of them in his 84 career games over six seasons with the New York Giants. He has scored five of them in his 11 games for the Philadelphia Eagles this season.

  • Saquon Barkley rips off THAT exclamation point to close the deal

26 carries for 255 yards and two touchdowns, including 70-yard and 72-yard touchdown runs. He has 302 yards of total offense.

  • Milton Williams AGAIN!

Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis are the big names on the interior, but Williams is the big beneficiary of the two stars’ double teaming. He’s sacked Stafford twice now, and the Eagles appear to be on their way to a seventh straight win

  • Puka Nacua flies over 100 yards through the air

His eighth grab of the night brought him 110 yards, surpassing the 100-yard mark for the third time in the six games he has played this season.

  • Jake Elliott gives Philadelphia a 16-point lead

His third short field goal of the game extends the lead, but the Rams are still only down by two possessions with 10:30 left in the game. All three field goals were made in the deep red zone, and if the Rams defense hadn’t stepped up a few times in the deep red zone, this game could already be a blowout. Now Matthew Stafford and Co. have to score a touchdown on this drive to stay in the game.

  • AJ Brown ends the 3rd quarter with a 28-yard pickup

Brown had 109 yards to go on his touchdown reception, and the Eagles entered the fourth quarter with a two-score lead and full momentum.

  • Joshua Karty misses from 47 yards

The Rams come away empty-handed after facing a 2nd-and-1 at the 12-yard line. A holding penalty and a sack killed the drive and the Eagles maintained their 13-point lead. The Eagles scored touchdowns on three of their last four drives and their offensive line – along with Saquon Barkley and Kenneth Gainwell – controlled the game.

  • Milton Williams comes up with a sack to force 4th-and-long

  • Puka comes out big at 4th and 1st

Stafford once again goes for Isaiah Rodgers, this time with a 4th-and-1 for a serve of 29 to keep the Rams’ drive alive.

  • Rams injury update

  • Eagles injury update

  • Kenneth Gainwell finds the end zone after a big gainer on a pass from Saquon Barkley

It was on 3rd down when Saquon Barkley hit a 31-yard pickup to get closer to 200 total yards for the game and put Philly in scoring position, and when the star needed a break, Gainwell was able to seal the deal complete the 13-yard run.

  • Stafford finds Demarcus Robinson for the score

Isaiah Rodgers is in the game for the injured Darius Slay, and Matthew Stafford picked the backup DB and found Robinson in response to Saquon Barkley’s touchdown run. This final drive looked like the opening pair of the Rams series, with them marching down the field seemingly effortlessly.

  • Matthew Stafford is 36 years old…and still making throws like that

That would be an outrageous throw for anyone, but for a veteran who has been in the NFL as long as Stafford, it’s a work of art.

  • How’s that for the start of the second half?

Philly scores one goal. A game. 70 yards. Saquon Barkley.

  • The Eagles lead 13-7 at halftime

Philly went down near midfield with two seconds left in the half and Josh Sweat sacked Matthew Stafford on the Hail Mary attempt, so the game went into halftime with Philadelphia leading 13-7.

  • A pass interference penalty puts the ball at midfield with 21 seconds left

The Eagles can use the entire field even if they still have the timeouts in their pocket

  • The Eagles force another punt and get the ball back with two timeouts

Philly only needs 30-35 yards to get into field goal range with 26 seconds remaining in the half

  • AJ Brown finds the end zone to give the Eagles a 13-7 lead

That pass was reviewed after it was initially called an incomplete pass, but officials determined Brown was in control and took three strides into the end zone for the score. Four catches for 69 yards in the first half for Brown, who did the heavy lifting without DeVonta Smith. He has four catches on Philadelphia’s 11 completed passes, and Jahan Dotson – who has one catcher – is the only other catcher with a target.
