Doctor Who Christmas Special 2024: title, cast, plot, trailer and everything we know so far

The Doctor Who The 2024 Christmas Special will light up our screens over the holidays as the Doctor and a new friend embark on a mission to save the world.

Last year’s festive special, The Church On Ruby Road, was the first full-length adventure for Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and also introduced us to our companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.

When we last saw the Doctor, he was traveling in the Tardis to travel on his own after Ruby decided to spend some time getting to know her birth parents – but what will his next adventure entail?

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2024 release date

The broadcast date for the Doctor Who Christmas special in 2024 has not yet been confirmed by the BBC, but we can assume it will take place at some point during the festive fortnight. Last year’s special aired on Christmas Day itself, and that seems like a pretty safe bet. Christmas plans will be confirmed in early December, so check back for an update!

We also don’t have a release date yet for release on Disney Plus in the US.

Plot and title of the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas special

This year’s Doctor Who Christmas special is called “Joy To The World” and was written by former showrunner Steven Moffat.

The story introduces us to Joy checking into a London hotel in the year 2024 for what she thinks is a very quiet stay – and she’s completely wrong! When Joy opens a secret door to the Time Hotel, she encounters danger, dinosaurs – and the Doctor. But a deadly plan is put into action just in time for Christmas. With an old enemy of the Doctor lurking in the wings and all of human history hanging in the balance, can the Doctor and Joy save Christmas everywhere at once?

Ncuti Gatwa will of course return as The Doctor, and Derry girl And Bridgerton Star Nicola Coughlan plays Joy. Other cast members in the special include: Red eyesis Jonathan Aris as Melnak, Our flag means deathis Joel Fry as Trev, AccidentFeaturing Julia Watson as Hilda, Steph de Whalley as Anita, Peter Benedict as Basil and Niamh Marie Smith as Sylvia.

The trailer shows us various locations throughout history, including the Queen’s Hotel in war-torn Manchester in 1940, the Orient Express crossing Italy in 1962, and the base camp on Everest in 1953. At each of these locations, unsuspecting travelers are taken by the The Doctor’s surprise arrival surprises him with a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin latte, only to realize he’s in the wrong room.

Finally, at the Sandringham Hotel in London in 2024, Joy checks into a very pink room for Christmas. She is surprised when an interior door opens and a Silurian in a business suit walks through, and she panics and points the hotel’s hairdryer at him. Then the doctor comes again with his ham and cheese toastie and pumpkin latte and smiles at Joy.

The preview clip shows the Doctor using his sonic screwdriver to reveal a logo on a briefcase for Villengard Conflict Solutions (as seen in the 2024 episode “Boom”) – the largest weapons manufacturer in history and very old enemies of the Doctor. Joy wonders why a weapons manufacturer would want to create a star, which triggers a question-and-answer mode explaining that Villengard is involved in creating a “functionally infinite” customizable energy source, and Joy recognizes the voice as that of the Silurian who was in her room.

The Doctor explains to the Silurian that if a starseed explodes on Earth at any point in history, all living things will be burned to death – adding that they have miscalculated and should. began about 65 million years ago to give the star time to grow. The room begins to shake as what appear to be giant footsteps approach as Joy tries to get the Doctor’s attention – and suddenly a giant dinosaur appears, crashing into the floor of the tree hut the Doctor and Joy are in. The dinosaur eats the briefcase and its eyes begin to glow. The Doctor shouts “Oh, fridge!” as the floor gives way and he and Joy slide towards the dinosaur’s open mouth…
