Canucks vs. Penguins prediction, tips and odds for tonight’s NHL game

The Vancouver Canucks took care of business on Tuesday night in Boston, picking up a narrow victory over the Bruins, and this is the case another great place to get a result against the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins.

My predictions for the Canucks vs. Penguins game have captain Quinn Hughes leading the attack and taking advantage of a defense that has struggled all season.

Let’s break things down further with my November 27 NHL picks ahead of puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on Sportsnet Pacific at PPG Paints Arena.

My Canucks analysis

Quinn Hughes is as consistent as they come. He has averaged 3.4 shots per game this season and has produced unmatched volume, and not just compared to other defenders.

The Vancouver Canucks blueliner has amassed 168 shot attempts this season, trailing only Filip Forsberg and David Pastrnak in the league.

As you might expect, this kind of volume leads to remarkable success. He has cleared 2.5 shots at a rate of 64% this year and has had at least two shots on goal in 18 consecutive games.

It doesn’t matter whether Hughes is at home or on the road. It doesn’t matter whether he’s playing against a good team or a bad team. He regularly clears his line and gives himself a legitimate shot – no pun intended – even when he doesn’t.

Hughes has put up some big shooting numbers in recent Smash spots, including nine combined shots on 21 attempts against the two New York teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins are an equally good, if not better matchup.

The Penguins rank 29th in 5-on-5 shot suppression this year and play at the second-fastest pace in the league. Hughes has recorded 51 more shot attempts at 5-on-5 than the next best Canadian, so it stands to reason that he will be the biggest beneficiary.

The positional play is also very favorable, as only four teams allowed defensemen more shots per game than the Penguins.

Hughes should have plenty of room to operate and threaten from the back end in this game. Expect him to take full advantage.

Canucks vs Penguins odds analysis

This line has moved towards the Penguins since the opener, with the Canucks backers now trading at -114. This is likely a side effect of the fact that the Canucks are playing in a back-to-back situation and third-line goalkeeper Arthurs Silovs is ready to put the header in the net.

Vancouver has beaten Pittsburgh in recent history, winning three of the last five meetings. Four of these games were decided by just one goal, two times extra time was necessary.
