Ben Affleck bonds with ex-wife Jennifer Garner on Thanksgiving while Jennifer Lopez goes through divorce: ‘He’s very happy’ “You could hear the bang, bang, bang,” witnesses recall of their experiences during the Park Plaza Mall shooting

Thanksgiving in New York City is all about the hustle and bustle—whether you’re dodging the crowds at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade or navigating John F. Kennedy International Airport with a bag full of side dishes. And area airports are expecting record-breaking numbers of visitors this year.

But before you stuff your carry-on with holiday cheer, the Transportation Security Administration has a message for travelers:

Not everything is fly friendly.

The agency released its latest guidelines, including some downright strange points. And honestly, people needed to know… Can you really take antlers on a plane?

It turns out: yes. Yes, you can.

Here’s a look at some of the most confusing items New Yorkers might try to fly this Thanksgiving — and what will make it through security.

Things You Can Absolutely Bring (But Why?)

  • Antler: Antlers are a surprising “yes” for both carry-on and checked luggage.
  • Artificial skeleton bones: If your turkey centerpiece has a spooky spooky side, these bones are ready to fly.
  • Balloons (not inflated): The TSA says you’re free to grab these balloons, but you’ll have to inflate them later. And don’t try to inflate them during the flight either.
  • Live corals: According to TSA, live corals are allowed in the water and in a clear container after inspection by a TSA officer. But you can’t check them. (The same rules apply to live fish.)
  • Harry Potter wand: Wizards can rest easy this holiday season.
  • Handcuffs: We don’t ask questions. Neither is the TSA. Just make sure they are in your carry-on or checked luggage.

Things that you would think would be okay, but definitely aren’t

  • Magic 8 Ball: This retro classic has no happiness. Due to the liquids it contains, it is not suitable for carry-on luggage, but you can always check it (and ask later if your bag survived the trip).
  • Bowling pins: Try it and you’ll stand out in the security line. The TSA says pins “can be used as clubs” and can only be carried in checked baggage. However, bowling balls fit in both bags.
  • Creamy cheese: Whether it is spreadable is questionable. The strict TSA rule is 3.4 ounces or less for carry-on luggage. Everything else should be stowed in checked baggage. However, firm cheese is fine.

Hard pass no matter what

  • Bear Spray and Bear Banger Repellents: If your Thanksgiving plans involve fending off wildlife, maybe just drive along. These items are completely prohibited.
  • English Christmas crackers: The TSA says no to these festive party poppers. Their resemblance to explosives keeps them grounded, so leave the bangs for your party playlist.
  • Dynamite: Just… no.

Surprisingly fly-friendly

  • Live lobster: Yes, you can bring the lobster as a pet – but it’s complicated. Some airlines allow live lobsters in carry-on luggage after a TSA inspection, while others require screening.
  • Pizza: Whole cakes, slices, or even just crusts – it’s TSA approved.
  • sand: If you want to take a piece of the beach with you to Grandma’s house, you’re in luck.
  • Cowboy spurs: Spurs may be carried in carry-on or checked baggage.

According to the TSA, it is also important to note that all food should be stored properly when traveling to prevent food-borne illnesses. Ice packs are allowed if you need to keep something cold, but they must be frozen solid and not melted at security.

Safe journey.
