As the sun rose this morning, bargain hunters gathered on Reid Street to take advantage of Black Friday deals from retailers on the island.

Shoppers lined up on the sidewalk outside department stores offering discounts of up to 70 percent on items, a tradition that marks the start of holiday shopping.

When the Phoenix Center’s doors opened at 7 a.m., eager customers, some with copies of newspaper advertisements in hand, streamed in all directions.

Marty Grandors, a store manager, said: “The last few days have been hectic getting everything ready. But we are ready for it, it is the start of the holiday season, so to speak.

“We’re going up until 9pm tonight and Santa will be here tonight so we’re expecting a big turnout.”

At Brown & Co across the street, shoppers were busy scanning the aisles for the best deals.

A saleswoman at the department store said she expected numerous customer visits throughout the day.

A mother of one said she managed to buy gifts for her little boy as well as her in-laws and other family members at the Phoenix Center.

She said she took the day off to visit stores around Hamilton looking for other Black Friday deals.
