Paris Saint-Germain must do everything they can to avoid being eliminated from the Champions League after their 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich.

The Ligue 1 leaders started the new league phase table 25th – a position that would see them quit Europe altogether if things don’t improve – and could fall a few places back if results are against on Wednesday fail him.

To make matters worse, PSG will not have Ousmane Dembele available for their next Champions League game against RB Salzburg next month after he was sent off – somewhat harshly – for two bookable offenses and will therefore serve a one-match ban must.

Bayern’s only goal of the game came just before half-time when Matvei Safonov – who started in place of Gianluigi Donnarumma in PSG’s goal – failed to win Joshua Kimmich’s inward corner and his mistake led to Kim Min-jae scored a simple header from close range.

Bayern had a few chances to add to their tally, but Jamal Musiala was denied by a great save from Safonov, while Kingsley Coman and substitutes Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Müller all missed good chances.

This has boosted the Bundesliga giants’ chances of finishing in the top eight, which would see them automatically qualify for the last 16, and they face Shakhtar Donetsk, Feyenoord and Slovan Bratislava in their final three games of the league phase.

With games against Salzburg, Manchester City and Stuttgart looming, PSG know they have little room for error if they want to continue in Europe after January.
