A critically acclaimed anime film known for its stunning hand-drawn animation but often dark themes surrounding the horrors of World War II has arrived on Crunchyroll. The extended version of In this corner of the worldofficially titled In this corner (and other corners) of the worldhas now been made available to stream for anime fans worldwide.




First published in 2016, In this corner of the world is about an 18-year-old woman named Suzu Urano who moves to Hiroshima in 1944 after getting married. After the bombing of Hiroshima in World War II, Suzu must find the determination and perseverance to continue living in a war-torn country, among other daily struggles. The beautiful and poetic film shows that even in the midst of tragedy, people can come together and work as a community to rebuild their lives, making the newly streamed film as heartwarming as it is often heartbreaking.

Crunchyroll is now streaming the Studio Ghibli-esque extended version “In This Corner of the World.”

In this corner of the world has received numerous awards, including the 40th Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Animated Film and the Jury Prize of the 41st Annecy International Animated Film Festival. The film was directed by Sunao Katabuchi at MAPPA, an anime studio best known for films such as “ Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen And Chainsaw Man. The original version of In this corner of the world On the popular film review site Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has a critic score of 97% and an audience score of 87%.

The extended version of the film, In this corner (and other corners) of the worldwas released in 2019, also directed and co-written by director Katabuchi. The 168-minute film is one of the longest animated films in history. Many viewers have compared over the years In this corner of the world on works by Studio Ghibli, especially works with a similar theme Grave of the Fireflies. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Katabuchi actually has a connection to Ghibli, having previously worked on 1989 Kiki’s delivery service as assistant director. He co-wrote the script with Chie Uratani, who also worked on it Kiki as main animator.
