Costco eggs and SunFed pickles recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

Cucumbers shipped to 13 states and organic eggs sold at 25 Costco stores were recalled this week due to possible salmonella contamination.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Arizona-based SunFed Produce has recalled cucumbers sold between October 12 and November 26.

The whole fresh American cucumbers were sold by SunFed and other importers and shipped to customers in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri , New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

People who purchased pickles during the window should check with the store where they purchased them to see if the product is part of the recall.

“When we learned of this issue, we took immediate action to protect consumers. “We are working closely with authorities and the affected ranch to determine the possible cause,” said Craig Slate, President of SunFed. “Here at SunFed, food safety and the health and well-being of consumers have been a priority for more than 30 years. We require all of our growers to strictly comply with FDA food safety requirements.”

No illnesses were immediately reported.

Costco Egg Recall

Meanwhile, Handsome Brook Farms voluntarily recalled nearly 11,000 cases of Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand name.

According to the company’s announcement on the FDA website, the eggs landed on shelves in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee starting Nov. 22.

The recalled eggs have a UPC number of 9661910680 and are packaged in plastic egg cartons with the Kirkland signature on the top. The recall only applies to devices with Julian code 327 and an expiration date of January 5, 2025 printed on the side of the plastic egg carton. No other products were affected by this recall.

The recall was initiated after the company discovered that eggs not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging.

The company said there have been no complaints of illness so far.

The company said affected consumers should stop consuming the product and return the identified units to their local Costco store for a full refund or discard the products.

Salmonella can cause symptoms that begin six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria and include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Most people recover within a week without treatment, but young children, people over 65 and people with weakened immune systems can become seriously ill.
