Fabian Hurzeler on Amex’s safe standing plan

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler supports the introduction of a safe standing area at the Amex Stadium and appreciates the club’s “openness to new things”.

The Seagulls announced plans on Wednesday to introduce safe standing areas in the north stand of the stadium from the start of the 2025/26 season.

The club said the safe standing area would mirror the setup at Brentford, with a railing in front of the seat and fans required to remain in their allocated seat during the game.

There is already secure status in numerous leagues in Europe, including in Hurzeler’s home country of Germany.

“Honestly, I think it’s a great thing,” he said.

“I experienced a great atmosphere in the Bundesliga. In German stadiums it is normal for some people to stand, especially at my former club St. Pauli.”

“What I experienced, I don’t know if it was because they were standing or not, but it was great support. Very vocal support, very emotional support.”

“It’s great that we’re doing this, I really love it. I also really love that we are open to new things, this club shows that they are open to new things and do things in a different way. They like to make decisions like “Others have never done that and that’s something I value very much and that’s also my mindset and attitude.

“So let’s see how it goes and maybe in two or three years we’ll be sitting here and the whole stadium is up and that’s just the starting point. Let’s see how this develops.”
