Tiffany Haddish names her pets after things she wishes they had more of. Namely, sleep.

Her dog Sleeper and cats Sleepy and Catonic (whom she adopted from the set of the cat movie Keanu) make her house in LA’s Crenshaw district a home. That and her underwear. “I spent six months here and there making films, but my animals and my underwear, my trophies, everything is in LA,” she says.

In “Sunday Funday” the people of LA present us, piece by piece, their ideal Sunday in the city. Find ideas and inspiration for where to go, what to eat and how to enjoy life on the weekend.

After bouncing around in foster care in Southern California throughout her childhood, the comedian has settled in South Central LA. “South Central is geographically the safest place to live,” said Haddish, who has invested in real estate in the area and elsewhere in L.A. County. “I look for fault lines in everything I buy in Los Angeles County. South Central is the safest place to be when floods, natural disasters and fires occur. I own property in other states but do not live there. I house foster youth.”

Haddish, who recently produced and starred in the Vice docuseries Black Comedy in America (now available to stream on Philo), says her perfect Sunday would be spent indoors in solitude. “I usually spend my Sundays in praise, worship and rest,” said Haddish, who is of Jewish-Eritrean descent. “I cook and sleep and try not to be around a lot of people because I’m always around a lot of people. I would love to stay in bed all day and read my Torah, cook, and watch cartoons. That’s what I would prefer.”

But if forced outdoors, the comedian’s dream Sunday would begin with exercise, followed by stops for shrimp and barbecue.

7 a.m.: Hike in Kenneth Hahn Park

I probably do this every two months, but I like to start at Kenneth Hahn Park Then you continue hiking over the MRT bridge (Mark Ridley-Thomas) to Marina del Rey. You can walk to Marina del Rey, which is really awesome. And as I take this walk, I stop at a fruit truck that has smoothies straight from Jefferson. I stop there, get something out of the truck, continue my walk and drive it to the marina.

It takes about two to three hours depending on how fast you go. I start in the morning and when I get there, three hours have already passed. Then I either take one of those Lime scooters and go home or walk back. So it will be like a full day of hiking. Or I get in an Uber and come home.

7 a.m.: Start the day with a barre class

I hate going to the gym because people feel like they have to talk to you or guide you through your workout. Or try taking photos or filming while you do it. At Pure Barre, everyone works out at the same time, so you don’t have time to grab your phone and take photos. The people don’t bother me there, it’s a full body workout and only takes 50 minutes. And your body looks phenomenal. It’s an awesome workout.

When I go to class early, I get the pastrami from Subway and let it rest in the fridge until 1 p.m. If I don’t have business meetings all day, I won’t be able to do it at all. But that’s my pleasure for myself.

I fast intermittently and therefore don’t eat (between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m.). So I’ll be starving until 1am. There is no limit to meals between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., it depends on what my stomach can tolerate. Put this in the article: “Unlimited meals until 8 p.m.”

2:00 p.m.: Fill up with shrimp and side dishes

It’s like that on Sundays Mel’s fish shack or D’s Original Takeout Grill. (At Mel’s) I get the red snapper shrimp combo dinner with potato salad and kale. Always. I used to eat the crab soup all the time, but they stopped making it because they said it was too expensive to make.

(At D) I’ll have either the brisket dinner or the grilled shrimp. And he makes this fire gumbo, usually on Sundays.

However, I usually fly back on a Sunday morning, so I’ll stop there then LAX tacos whenever I get off the plane because they have the best tacos in Los Angeles. Especially their shrimp tacos – fire!

4 p.m.: Pit stop in the District

In the District, right next door to Crenshaw, there’s this fried lobster that’ll make you want to slap your mother! All food in the district is fire. The drinks are good on Sundays, but I usually like to go on Wednesdays or Tuesdays because there are live bands playing there. But you see, I don’t do this all the time because you definitely have to be willing to be sociable. And every time I go there I meet someone from my past. I ask myself, “Am I ready for a reunion?” Which is fine if it’s someone cool; It’s not okay if it’s your ex.

4 p.m.: Daily appointment at Alta Adams

On Sundays in the summer Alta Adams has an outdoor patio and I believe there are discounts on drinks on Sundays. I don’t drink anymore so I don’t know, but in the summer I sit on the patio, especially if I have a date or something. I prefer one date a day, one date before sunset – “Pick me up at 4 o’clock, otherwise I’ll meet you at 5.” And then I can be home at 8, 9 o’clock.

8 p.m.: Relax at home

In my house I literally read scripts, write jokes, write films, in my garden. And then when I’m ready to watch something, I watch cartoons: Thundercats, Strawberry Shortcake, Family Guy, American Dad, Big Mouth. I watch Solar Opposites because I only get the pages for my scenes, so I don’t really know what’s going on in the show. So I watch and say, “This is crazy.” And I like “South Park.” I love a good review. “Ninja Turtles”? I’ll be happy as hell. “Snorkel.” I love cartoons because I know that no one really gets hurt. I feel like on a lot of these shows you hear stories about people’s stuff and you think, “Damn.”

8 p.m.: Comedy to end the evening

I do a comedy show on Sunday evenings. My favorite venue in LA is the Laugh Factory. But on a Sunday I’ll probably be at the improv store, the comedy store, or the theater. I didn’t notice being at the Laugh Factory, even though it’s my favorite club and I’m invested in it. Never on a Sunday.
