Actor Macaulay Culkin will host a screening of Home Alone, the film that made him famous, at the Masonic Temple in Detroit on Sunday, December 8th. The 7 p.m. show will be followed by an interview and audience Q&A.

“Home Alone” was written by the late Lansinger John Hughes (“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) and directed by Chris Columbus (“Adventures in Babysitting”). In it, Culkin portrays 8-year-old Kevin McCallister. A large gathering of the McCallister clan gathers at Kevin’s suburban Chicago home on the eve of their family vacation to Paris for Christmas. Kevin’s mother Kate (Catherine O’Hara, “Beetlejuice”) banishes Kevin to the attic for bad behavior.

During the night, a violent storm causes a power outage. This turns off the alarm clocks and causes the family to oversleep. They head to the airport but accidentally leave Kevin behind. Kate realizes this on the plane on the way to Paris and does everything she can to get in touch with him as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, Kevin enjoys having the house to himself, but that’s short-lived when a pair of burglars, Harry (Joe Pesci, “Goodfellas”) and Marv (Daniel Stern, “City Slickers”), get better known as the Wet Bandits, plan to break into the McAllister residence at the latest in a series of houses they have recently robbed.

However, Kevin rigs the house with handmade booby traps, outsmarting the Wet Bandits, who suffer various injuries and are ultimately defeated. The police then arrest her. Kate comes home on Christmas Day and, much to her relief, finds Kevin safe.

Home Alone premiered on November 16, 1990 and, despite lukewarm reviews, was the second highest-grossing film of the year, grossing $476.7 million at the box office. It was also the highest-grossing action comedy in 20 years. It made Culkin a child star and is considered one of the best Christmas films of all time. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards and was selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Registry in 2023. The film’s success spawned five sequels, including 1992’s Alone in New York, which marked Culkin’s final appearance in the film franchise.
