Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered an ankle injury before Saturday’s big rematch against the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station. Don’t expect that to stop the Texas native from missing one of the biggest games in state history, but ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the injury will certainly “linger” for Ewers.

Thamel said on SportsCenter on Tuesday that Ewers wouldn’t play 100 percent against Texas A&M.

“I was told that Quinn Ewers has a mild ankle sprain that will remain for the Texas A&M game,” Thamel said. “Sources told me today that Quinn Ewers is still scheduled to start for the Longhorns in College Station on Saturday night. I’m told he’s feverishly rehabilitating. … So the reality for Quinn Ewers is that he won’t be 100 percent on Saturday, but he’s working on being the best version of himself.

Ewers injured his ankle in the first half of Texas’ 31-14 win over the Kentucky Wildcats but did not miss a snap despite spending time in the medical tent during a defensive series. He has missed at least two games due to injury in each of his three seasons with Texas, totaling seven. This includes two absences this year due to an oblique injury.

Texas A&M linebacker Taurean York sent Ewers a somewhat backhanded compliment while speaking to the media on Monday.

“His O-line protects him well,” York said. “He basically holds the ball with both hands, a firm, tight grip. He has a clean pocket when he throws a ball, and of course with any quarterback it’s like he’s playing pitch and catch. If they just stand there untouched.” “They’re going to throw some good balls to some very good receivers.”

Texas A&M and Texas will face off at Kyle Field on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
