Chopper 7 was over the scene around 4:30 p.m. and there was a large police and fire presence near Clark Street and Fullerton Avenue.

A bullet hole in a store window marked the spot outside where the shooting occurred, on a popular stretch of restaurants, shops and salons in Lincoln Park. Gunfire on the busy block sent police to the scene.

“It’s scary to see someone get shot and just fall to the ground,” said Aileen Nieves, a witness who works on the block.

Police said the 34-year-old man walked toward several people on the sidewalk before he was shot. Multiple witnesses told ABC7 that the man who was shot roamed the block most of the day and behaved erratically, harassing and threatening pedestrians and hitting passing vehicles.

At around 4 p.m., witnesses said the man encountered another armed man.

“Started screaming, screaming, pushing the guy, and he did it again, and then the guy came, pulled out his gun and shot him,” Nieves said. “I chose the wrong person. He said, ‘Find it out today,’ and he figured it out.”

“It’s disturbing that something like this happens in the neighborhood and you always think the North Side is so safe… but no, it’s Chicago and it can happen anywhere,” said Lincoln Park resident John Cutler.

According to the fire department, the man who was shot was hit twice. Witnesses told ABC7 he was shot in the chest and the other gunman calmly walked away from the scene.

Chicago police said there were no arrests.

Witnesses also say that the man, who was shot once, was either taken away or arrested by police. After initial reports that he had threatened people, the man returned and then the shooting occurred.

Ald. Timmy Knudsen issued the following statement to residents:

“A man was shot in the 43rd Precinct near the intersection of Clark St and Fullerton Ave this evening at approximately 4:30 p.m. Initial reports indicate that the victim was exhibiting erratic and dangerous behavior at the time of the shooting and was preoccupied with the perpetrator aggressively fleeing southbound before the incident. The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital and is in critical condition this evening. There is reason to believe this is an isolated incident in which the victim and perpetrator had a prior relationship. However, the case is currently being fully investigated by the 19th District Police and Region 3 Detectives. If you wish to contact police, please call Area 3 Detectives at (312) 744-8261, email at [email protected] or visit Chicago Police Tip. Line” here. We will continue to update you on this situation as more information becomes available. Thank you to the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department and other first responders who continue to keep us safe.”
