Although Winter lasts from December 21st to March 20th. Texas never actually follows these guidelines. West Texas is not known to have the coldest winters, but we have had a few colder winters.

THE FREEZE OF 2021

According to the National Center for Environmental Information, There was a winter freeze across Texas that resulted in a winter storm warning being in effect for all counties. This occurred February 11-20, 2021, making it the coldest winter storm since December 1989.

On February 10, sleet and freezing rain began to fall in the Lone Star State. The turning point occurred on February 14th when the Arctic cold front crept in. The big freeze lasted almost nine days and the last severe freeze warning expired on Saturday February 20th. The frost left over 10 million people without power.

WINTER IN TEXAS 2024-2025

Accordingly Farmer’s AlmanacTexas is expecting a dry winter in the 24-25 season. Temperatures will rise and snowfall will be low for the Lone Star State. La Niña will be the reason for the higher temperatures and lower sweating in Texas. Texans in the “cold zone” in the Panhandle will experience their coldest temperatures in January and February 2025.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR WEST TEXAS?

Although most of Texas experiences a temperate winter, winter in far West Texas is a little different. They predict the weather will get cooler and wetter the further west you go. It looks like the Permian Basin lies on the mild and dry side of this line.

Maybe a mild winter is just what we need this year. Considering my household was without power for five days, I still feel like a victim of the Great Freeze of 2021.
