Bowen Yang watched the final cut of Evil with some of him Saturday Night Live co-stars – and the film left them all a crying mess.

The comedian, who plays Pfannee in the new movie musical, revealed that he saw the film with him for the very first time SNL Castmates at a private screening around the time Ariana Grande hosted the show in October. “We were all in shambles at the end,” Yang told PEOPLE. “Sarah Sherman sobbed and said, ‘I didn’t expect to like it so much.'”

He continued: “It will get you. It flattens every demographic. Everyone is overwhelmed no matter what they’re dealing with and I’ve never been a part of anything like that. I don’t think I’ve seen a movie… have that universal impact.”

Although Yang said the experience was “so special,” he initially didn’t want to watch the film with his television colleagues. “I was so adamant about not going (to the screening) because I thought, ‘I think I need to see this for the first time with other friends who aren’t professionally involved and I just need to have a pure experience. ‘ ‘,” he explained.

However, Yang reconsidered when he remembered how Evil And SNL have been associated with him for 20 years. “My first trip to New York when I was 13 Evil had just come out, but I begged my parents to go to the Gershwin just so I could touch the glass and look into the lobby. We couldn’t afford tickets, but I just wanted to feel it in my hand, just look at the signs.”

This moment wasn’t the only foreshadowing on the journey. “That same day we went to 30 Rock on NBC and did the studio tour and I was in the seats SNLsaid Bowen. “So I thought, ‘If these two things happen on the same day, I’ll have to intersect them again.'”

The paths of the two projects crossed again SNL Last week, when host and musical guest Charli XCX, Yang and numerous other cast members portrayed a number of celebrities auditioning for various Evil Roll. Yang played Fran Lebowitz and, at another point, Charli XCX (alongside the musician herself, who did her impression of her frequent collaborator Troye Sivan) in the pre-recorded sketch.

SNL also made fun of it Evil during Grande’s hosting stint. In her monologue, the pop star, who plays Glinda in the film, joked: “I’m not going to talk about it.” Evil“, only to be interrupted by Yang wearing her character’s outfit. “Didn’t anyone tell you that? We cut that Evil Sketch!” she said.

“Oh – that’s okay, I didn’t want to do it anyway,” Yang replied unconvincingly.

Evil is playing in the cinema now. Saturday Night Live returns on December 7th with host Paul Mescal and musical guest Shaboozey.
