The Dallas Mavericks return to the American Airlines Center to take on the New York Knicks on Wednesday night. The Mavericks have been making their way across the country in the last week, with games in Denver, Miami and Atlanta. They have won two of those three games, including two games in a row, so Dallas is on an upward trend.

Luka Doncic is currently not expected to be used, so the Mavericks will again be short-handed. But Kyrie Irving has stepped up while the franchise cornerstone is gone, and so have several other role players. However, the Knicks have the players who can slow the Mavericks’ momentum. Finding ways to get good shots for the rest of the rotation will be crucial for the coaching staff as the Knicks focus on Irving.

Here are three things to consider before playing:

Don’t let the Knicks score three points

New York is in the middle of the league when it comes to 3-point attempts from distance with 36.5 shots per game. But when they let them fly, they hit them. The Knicks are shooting nearly 40 percent from behind the arc, ranking second in the NBA. Only the Cleveland Cavaliers score 3 points when the score is higher.

Most NBA analysts believe that defenses can’t really control 3-point shooting. What they can do, however, is prevent teams from making 3-point shots. Therefore, it will be crucial for the Mavericks to make sure the Knicks don’t generate a lot of shots from behind the arc. If Dallas lets New York miss a significant number of open threes, the game could quickly slip away from them.

Can the Mavericks win the turnover battle?

The Mavericks have long been one of the stingiest teams in the NBA, typically ranking in the top five in turnovers per game each year. This year, however, thanks to slightly higher tempo, they are ranked eighth, giving the ball away 12.7 times per game. That’s not bad at all and not too far off from the best team in the league, which only commits 11.1 turnovers per game. However, that team is the Knicks.

The Mavericks cannot be careless with the ball. If they do that, they will lose because the Knicks won’t give the ball away. If New York gets easy chances due to turnovers, Dallas will have a hard time getting a win.

OG Anunoby will be a handful

PJ Washington has been of great importance to the Mavericks since arriving via trade last season. He provided solid defense, rebounding and toughness that was much needed. He will be needed to deal with OG Anunoby, who is having a great year for the Knicks. The burly forward is coming off a 40-point game against the Denver Nuggets and there’s no reason to believe he can’t do the same to the Mavericks. Anunoby is shooting 42 percent from deep this season, and while Jalen Brunson is the engine that drives the Knicks’ offense, Anunoby can be a killer when he gets enough open 3-pointers. The Mavericks need to know where he is at all times and not let him get into a rhythm.

Here’s how to watch

The game begins at 6:30 p.m. CST on ESPN.
