(WJW) – A winter storm warning has been issued in advance of the upcoming period of winter weather.

A winter storm watch is currently in effect for Ashtabula and Lake counties and more may be added.

The NWS is forecasting more than 8 inches of snowfall for these areas late Thursday night through Monday morning.

According to the NWS, 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour could fall in the snow bands, particularly along I-90, with visibility less than a quarter mile.

Wednesday starts off dry. It will remain mostly cloudy and cool with temperatures in the lower 40s.

The showers move in from the southwest in the late afternoon/evening and last until the evening. The rain will transition to a rain-snow mix by late evening.

Wednesday-Wednesday evening Futurecast:

Rain to snow with light accumulations between midnight and 6 a.m.

It snows between 7 and 8 a.m. Around midday there will be a short rain shower with later sunshine.

Late snow will begin early Friday. West to east winds will form a strong band throughout the day on Friday. South of this band there is little to no snow and some sunshine.

Highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s this weekend. This will be the coldest 6-day period in late November/early December since 2010!

The snow belt receives several rounds of lake effect snow. We will continue to monitor the forecast and adjust accordingly as we get closer.

Lake Effect Snow Checklist:

Places where the most snow could fall between Friday and Monday. Wind direction will be key. Lake Erie is still around 54 degrees that day, the warmest temperature in over 30 years. This will be a LONG event with the snow bands moving back and forth over a period of at least 5 days. A predominantly westerly wind will blow, keeping most of the heavy snowfall to the east. Dry air from the west will weaken bands from time to time this weekend/early next week. From late Friday to early next week there will be a sharp boundary between heavy snow and light snow in the south.
