Gwen Stefani Makes Surprising Reveal About Her Early Relationship With Blake Shelton: ‘Nothing Could Save Us’

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton may be one of the music industry’s ultimate power couples, but things haven’t always been smooth sailing for the duo – in fact, they wouldn’t have gotten together in the first place.

It is known that the couple met while working on The Voice, just as both were going through a difficult divorce in the public eye. The No Doubt frontwoman divorced Gavin Rossdale, with whom she has three sons: Kingston (18), Zuma (16) and Apollo (10). Meanwhile, Blake had split from fellow country music icon Miranda Lambert.

With her personal life in turmoil, Gwen explained that it wasn’t an ideal time to start a relationship.

“We had just met and it was chaos,” she told People. “Both of our lives were in total disarray, all over the floor. At that point, nothing could save us.”

She continued: “There was a point where I was like, ‘I can’t even talk to you. That’s crazy. I have enough problems already. That doesn’t happen anymore. We’re not going to text or anything.’ “

While Gwen wanted to end their blossoming relationship, Blake doubled down on wooing the singer in his own unique way. He began writing “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” which he and Gwen released as a duet in 2016.

“I think he really wanted to impress me because he doesn’t write songs as much as he used to. And I love writing songs. This is everything for me,” she said.

“If I want to feel like I have some meaning or value or something like that, it’s about writing a song. This is where I find my fulfillment.”

When Blake started writing the song, he asked the singer for help: “He sent it to me and it was a half-written song. He was like, ‘Help me finish this.'”

“So I wrote the verse back to him – the second verse of the song – and it’s just above the lyrics,” she added. “That was the first song we ever wrote together. We were never in the same room, but we wrote a song for each other.”

Since then, the pair have made a number of songs together, including “Nobody But You” and “Purple Irises.” But they have also been married since 2021 after starting dating in 2015. Not only do they make music together, but they also enjoy gardening on their Oklahoma ranch.
