Kansas forward Hunter Dickinson was sent off for a Flagrant 2 foul duke after a detailed review. He appeared to kick Duke forward Maliq Brown in their minds as they fought for a rebound.

Dickinson and Brown took the lead 10:26 into the second half Saturday Vegas showdown Game. While fighting for the ball, Dickinson hit Brown in the side of the head with his right foot, which was initially ruled a flagrant 1.

However, the referees went to the monitor and upgraded it to “Flagrant 2.” That meant Dickinson was ejected from the field for the remainder of the game.

On the ESPN broadcast: Fran Fraschilla expressed surprise at the decision to upgrade the foul to Flagrant 2. He disagreed and said that based on his perspective, he would have stayed with Flagrant 1.

“The rule is that it has to be severe and extreme,” Fraschilla said. “I would have given him a Flagrant 1, it’s a technical dead ball. I’m surprised it’s a Flagrant 2. … They felt it was severe and extreme. I felt it was excessive, which is an obvious A.”

Hunter Dickinson was in the midst of another impressive game for Kansas at the time of his ejection. He scored 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes of play. After the referees sent him off, he initially remained on the bench, but was escorted to the locker room at the next media timeout. According to the rule, players are not allowed to sit on the bench after being sent off.
