(NEXSTAR) – National sandwich chain Subway is reportedly ending its value meal offerings sooner than expected.

Citing a memo shared with Subway operators on Friday, Restaurant Business Magazine reports that the company is ending its deal for $6.99 for 6-inch menus on Wednesday, November 27. The campaign should run until December 26th.

The deal, which began Nov. 3 in honor of National Sandwich Day, allowed customers to order a 6-inch submarine, a small fountain drink and a bag of chips or two regular cookies. When Subway introduced it, it was touted as a low-cost option.

According to the report, seen by Restaurant Business Magazine, the dining deal overall “is not producing the expected results.”

Subway did not immediately respond to Nexstar’s request for comment, but told multiple outlets that its “value approach is thoughtful and strategic, leveraging data to balance consumer needs while protecting franchisees’ profits.”

While the company didn’t directly address the meal deal, the statement said it “takes feedback and data seriously, and when necessary, we quickly adjust course to ensure we’re doing what’s best for our franchisees, Guests and the entire company do.”

According to Restaurant Business Magazine, Subway instead plans to offer a digital offer through January 5, 2025, giving customers 20% off any sub.

Last year, Subway was acquired by Roark Capital, a private equity firm with experience in restaurant management. At the time, the company announced that it would continue restaurant modernization and international expansion under Roark’s ownership.

Founded in 1965, Subway is now one of the world’s largest restaurant chains with 37,000 locations in more than 100 countries.

But in the U.S. it has lost market share in recent years to fast-growing rivals like Panera and Firehouse Subs, which offer more diverse menus and newer stores.

Subway has tried to catch up; In 2021, the company updated its menu and announced a line of chef-developed sandwiches in 2022 after realizing that customers were tired of Subway’s traditional model where customers could build their own sandwiches. At the beginning of the year, Subway announced that it would stop selling Coca-Cola products from 2025.
