The hot stove has remained fairly cool in Cream City as the Milwaukee Brewers have largely stayed out of offseason contention so far.

While the team isn’t expected to make any big free agent splashes this winter, as usual, Milwaukee likely won’t sit idly by with all the deals being made before Opening Day in 2025.

The Brewers will likely be favorites to win their third straight National League Central title next season, but would certainly like to compete more in the postseason than they have in recent seasons.

To that end, Jim Bowden of the Athletics expects Milwaukee to make at least one big move this winter, sending closer Devin Williams to the Philadelphia Phillies for third baseman Alec Bohm.

“I also like this trade from the Brewers’ perspective because Bohm would clear third base and replace (Willy) Adames in their lineup, which would allow (Joey) Ortiz to play shortstop while Brice Turang stays at second.” said Bowden.

Williams has saved 97 games in his six seasons in Milwaukee, including 49 in 2023. However, Trevor Megill, who has been in the major leagues for four years, showed he is capable of finishing games by last season Recorded 21 saves with a 2.72 ERA. With Williams set to become a free agent after next season, it’s assumed the small-time Brewers will buy him while they still can.

FanGraphs currently projects Oliver Dunn, who hit .221 with a home run in 41 games in his MLB debut last season, to be Milwaukee’s starter at third base for 2025, with Adames almost certainly leaving town for that one Winter to receive a richer contract.

Bohm, a five-year MLB veteran, would be a big improvement over Dunn. He earned his first All-Star nomination in 2024 and has posted consecutive 97-RBI seasons for the Phillies. He is not eligible for free agency until after the 2026 season.
