The Denver Broncos waived tight end Greg Dulcich on Monday, giving other teams the opportunity to secure the young pass-catcher on waivers. The Kansas City Chiefs should be among the franchises considering submitting a waiver claim.

Dulcich, known for his speed, route-running ability and reliable hands, has shown great promise as a receiver-tight end. He came to the NFL as a junior early starter from UCLA and the Broncos took advantage of the opportunity to improve their offense in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Dulcich, there have been more lows than highs in his NFL career, as he has a long history of injuries despite his short time in the league.

Dulcich profiles himself as an athletic receiver tight end with strong hands. The downside was that he was a liability as a blocker, and combined with the injury history, the Broncos decided to cut ties to accommodate other players they needed to re-sign to the active roster.

In 2022, Dulcich recorded 33 catches for 411 receiving yards and 2 scores in just 10 games played. It was a promising start, but even then there were health concerns. From then on, Dulcich would play six more games over the next two seasons (including ’24), and the unpredictability of his availability was a headache for a roster where every position was important.

This has been a difficult year for the Chiefs at the position. Travis Kelce has remained effective, but not as dynamic. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ fourth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, TCU’s Jared Wiley, was out for the season due to injury. The same goes for veteran Jody Fortson, who shuts out two of four tight ends on this season’s roster.

The good news is that Noah Gray is having an outstanding season for the Chiefs and the Chiefs continue to be very productive overall at tight end along with Kelce. However, Dulcich would be a smart move. Securing a young, talented option like Dulcich could help strengthen the position now and in the future.
